It’s Official! London is number 1 for Shopping


Yay! London was today named best European city for shopping in the Globe Shopper City Index. Beating off stiff competition from the likes of Paris, Milan and Barcelona, London has come in as the number one destination choice for those of you who love to shop!

10 unusual facts about shopping in Britain:

  • London’s Oxford Street is the busiest shopping street in Europe.
  • London’s Selfridges is home to the largest shoe department in the world!
  • The Northern Quarter shopping district in Manchester is on a tentative list of nominated sites for UNESCO World Heritage Site Status.
  • It takes over 12,000 light bulbs to illuminate the famous facade of Harrods department store in London! (pictured above)
  • The small village of Hay-on-Wye in Wales is home to 40 second-hand bookshops and the largest collection of antique books in Europe.
  • A number of shops around Wales stock Clogau Gold, which comes from Snowdonia and one of the rarest in the world. Will and Kate’s royal wedding rings are made from Clogau Gold.
  • The design of Birmingham’s iconic Selfridges chain-mail building was inspired by the metal fabrics devised by fashion designer Paco Rabanne (pictured below).

    I have lived in Rio de Janeiro for more than fifty years. Missing being able to shop in London was something that was very hard to bear.
    When Marks and Spencers started selling abroad, I felt as though I had received freedom from prison. When I received my first parcel from London I touched it with awe.
